Jesus Creed 11

Over the last month we have been reflecting on the Jesus Creed as Jesus’ way of spiritual formation

Hear O Israel, the Lord our God.
The Lord is One.
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
Love your neighbor as yourself.

Formation

Living the Jesus Creed means having a perspective on life in light of God’s kingdom – a kingdom marked and shaped by fellowship with God (loving God) and with people who are being called to him (loving others).

Exercise 1

These are words of Jesus on spiritual formation.
Over the month of September: read – memorize – recite – reflect on these words daily.
Bask – sit in his presence and his love. Learn that love. Trust that love.
Take a few (or many) minutes to prayerfully read the Jesus Creed.
Allow this reminder of what we are called to be and do, shape our thinking and our actions.

Exercise 2

How do you think of heaven?

  • Is it simply something far off and this world is insignificant or is God the creator both of this world and the new heavens and earth?
  • How does understanding eternity as beginning now, shape or re-shape our life?
  • What we think of heaven and eternity is our perspective in life here.

Thomas a Kempis, in his “The Imitation of Christ” wrote:

Practice now what you’ll have to put into practcie then.Listen

Listen to this theme that relationship with God and with others is for all eternity.
Listen to what God is saying to you today about the importance of these relationships.

Imagine

Imagine perfect fellowship and intimacy with God and his people. Imagine that fellowship shaping your family, your friends, OCC.

Begin today – now – to consciously live in fellowship with God and his people.

Jesus Creed 10

This month we have been reflecting on the Jesus Creed as Jesus’ way of spiritual formation

Hear O Israel, the Lord our God.
The Lord is One.
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
Love your neighbor as yourself.

Formation

The “one thing needed” for spiritual formation is consistent attending to Jesus – heart, soul, mind and strength.

Exercise 2

How much of the day are you “attending to” or “abiding in” Jesus?

  • What distracts you? What breaks down your attending to or abiding in Jesus?
  • What practices or habits do you use to help you attend to or abide in Jesus?
  • When you read the Scriptures, is it “informational” or “formational“? Why is regular Bible reading important in living out the Jesus Creed?

Brother Lawrence in his “The Practice of the Presence of God” wrote:

I do this simply by keeping my attention on God and by generally and lovingly aware of him.”

  • Think about your own practice of abiding in Jesus and how you can read the Bible more “formationally.”
  • Sometime today read and reflect on these verses: John 15:1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9

Listen

Listen to the words of Jesus “Remain in me and I will remain in you” (John 15:4a).

  • Do you genuinely believe these words?
  • Do you hear these words as a promise from Jesus to you?

Imagine

Imagine what your day (today) will be like when you attend to Jesus and abide in Jesus consistently.

Begin today – now – to consciously abide in Jesus.

What If…

IF
What IF…
We lived the grace we are blessed with
And loved as we have been loved
What would that look like in practice, not just thought?
What IF…
We repented and believed
And turned our living right around
What would that look like among the forgotten?
What IF…
We took up our cross
Denied ourselves and followed
What would that look like in our rendering of wealth?
What IF…
God’s kingdom came down
And God’s will was the world’s constitution
What would the streets of earth look like?
What IF…
The first were last
And the last became our priority
What would the poorest places look like?
What IF…
We stored up treasure
In heaven and not on earth
What would the return on our investment look like?
What IF…
The rich like camels could make it
Through the eye of a needle
What would heaven on the other side look like?
What IF…
